Ingredients:
3/4 cup very warm water
1 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 milk
1 egg beaten
3/4 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups flour
2 tablespoons shortening melted
vegetable oil for frying
powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
Step one:
Start by activating the yeast in warm water and sugar in a mixer.
Step two:
Once the yeast is frothy and bubbly mix in milk, salt, egg, flour, and melted shortening to form the dough, using a kneading attachment, knead it until smooth.
Step three:
Form dough into a ball and place back in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let to rise until it has doubled in size, which takes about two hours.
Step four:
Roll out dough to a 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface. Using a Mickey-shaped cutter, cut out dough.
Step five:
Heat oil to 370°F in a large pot. Fry dough in small batches using a basket and tongs until golden brown (it takes just a couple minutes).
Serve:
Serve the beignets are with a generous dusting of powdered sugar, making sure to coat all of them thoroughly. Enjoy!
